When Can I Start Social Security?

Its own age-based system entirely โ€” independent of your MPSERS retirement eligibility and independent of Medicare too.

Three Ages, Three Outcomes

62
Earliest
Permanent reduction โ€” about 30% less than waiting, if your Full Retirement Age is 67
67
Full Retirement Age
100% of your Primary Insurance Amount โ€” no reduction, no bonus (applies to anyone born 1960 or later)
70
Maximum
Up to 24% more than your Full Retirement Age benefit โ€” no further gain past this age

Three completely separate clocks

Your Social Security claiming age has nothing to do with your MPSERS retirement eligibility or your Medicare eligibility (generally 65). You could claim MPSERS at 55, keep working, and not touch Social Security until 70 โ€” or any other combination. Nothing forces these to align.

โš–๏ธ
Working while claiming early?

If you claim before your Full Retirement Age and keep earning income, Social Security temporarily withholds part of your benefit above certain earnings limits โ€” that withholding stops permanently once you reach Full Retirement Age.

The bottom line

There's no single "right" age โ€” it depends on your health, other income, and whether you're still working. What matters here is knowing this decision is entirely yours to make on its own timeline, not something dictated by when you retire from teaching.
