How Does Social Security Work With MPSERS?

The short version: they don't actually "work together" at all โ€” they run entirely side by side, with no shared formula and no coordination required.

๐Ÿ’ฌ GLP Retirement Minute

MPSERS

Administered by Michigan's Office of Retirement Services (ORS) โ€” a state system.

You apply through miAccount. Your benefit is calculated purely from your own MPSERS record: FAC, factor, years of service.

Social Security

Administered by the federal Social Security Administration (SSA) โ€” completely separate from Michigan.

You apply directly through ssa.gov. Your benefit is calculated purely from your Social Security earnings record.

๐Ÿ”€
No shared formula, no required coordination

Your MPSERS pension amount has zero effect on how Social Security calculates your benefit, and vice versa. You can start one without starting the other โ€” retiring from teaching doesn't require claiming Social Security, and claiming Social Security doesn't require leaving your MPSERS job.

โœ…
Why this even works this way for you

Because most Michigan public school employment is Social Security-covered (see Will I Get Social Security?), you're paying into and building credits toward both systems simultaneously โ€” genuinely two independent income streams, not one substituting for the other.

๐Ÿ“‰
Didn't this used to be more complicated?

It used to be, for some people โ€” see Does My MPSERS Pension Reduce Social Security? for what changed.

The bottom line

Treat these as two separate retirement plans that happen to belong to the same person โ€” separate applications, separate timelines, separate rules. Neither one needs to know what the other is doing.
