Does My MPSERS Pension Reduce Social Security?
For decades the honest answer was "sometimes, for some people." As of 2025, the honest answer is no โ for everyone.
๐ฌ GLP Retirement MinuteNo. The rules that used to do this were fully repealed.
Two federal provisions โ WEP and GPO โ used to reduce Social Security benefits for people who also had a pension from work that didn't pay into Social Security. Both were repealed entirely by the Social Security Fairness Act, signed January 5, 2025.
What Those Old Rules Actually Did
WEP
Windfall Elimination ProvisionReduced your own Social Security retirement benefit if you also had a pension from non-covered work โ dropping the formula's initial replacement rate from 90% down to as low as 40%.
GPO
Government Pension OffsetReduced spousal or survivor Social Security benefits โ by two-thirds of the non-covered pension amount โ for people receiving both.
Both provisions only kicked in for a "non-covered pension" โ one from work that didn't withhold Social Security taxes. Since most Michigan public school employment does pay into Social Security, MPSERS generally wasn't a non-covered pension in the first place. This mattered most for educators with a mixed career โ time in a different state's non-covered teaching system, for example โ not for a typical single-state MPSERS career.

If you spent any time worrying about your pension quietly shrinking your Social Security check, that concern is now resolved by law โ not just for Michigan educators, but for public employees nationwide.
