Do I Get Health Insurance for Life?
A genuinely different answer depending on your track โ and for a growing share of members, the honest answer is "not in the traditional sense."
๐ฌ GLP Retirement MinuteIf You're on Premium Subsidy
This is genuine subsidized insurance for life once you're vested (10 years) โ MPSERS pays a percentage of your premium for as long as you're a retiree. The percentage depends on your service years and caps at 80%, so it's substantial, not free.
If You're on the Personal Healthcare Fund
There's no subsidized insurance here at all. You can still enroll in the retirement system's insurance plans, but you pay the full premium yourself โ no discount. What you do get for life is a portable fund to help cover whatever coverage you arrange.
Whichever track you're on, insurance enrollment through the retirement system happens immediately at your retirement effective date. If you disenroll at any point afterward โ you, your spouse, or your dependents โ you cannot re-enroll later. This isn't something to opt out of casually to "save money now" without thinking it through.

"Health insurance for life" used to be the standard MPSERS answer. For anyone hired since September 2012, it's more accurate to say "help paying for whatever health coverage you arrange yourself, for life" โ a real benefit, just a structurally different one than it used to be.
