Do I Need a Supplemental Retirement Account?
Not a yes-or-no answer that applies to everyone โ a handful of questions worth actually asking yourself, using facts you've likely already gathered elsewhere on this roadmap.
๐ฌ GLP Retirement MinuteQuestions Worth Asking Yourself
Which MPSERS plan are you actually on?
Basic and MIP members have zero built-in savings component โ everything beyond the pension formula is entirely up to you. Pension Plus, Pension Plus 2, and DC Plan members already have some savings happening automatically. See What Plan Am I In? if you're not sure.
Did you find a real gap?
If you've worked through Will My Pension Replace My Paycheck? and How Much Income Will I Need in Retirement?, you may already have a concrete number in mind โ or you may have found your pension and Social Security genuinely cover what you need.
Do you have higher-priority needs first?
An emergency fund and high-interest debt are usually worth addressing before locking money away in a retirement account you can't easily access.
Does starting small still make a difference?
See Why Does Starting Early Matter? โ the honest answer is usually yes, since time in the account matters more than the size of each contribution.
Someone on Basic with no other savings and a confirmed gap has a very different answer than someone on Pension Plus 2 who's already found their numbers work. Both are legitimate outcomes of asking the same questions honestly.
If you walk through these four questions and land on "probably yes," the next step is understanding the actual mechanics โ see What Is a 403(b)? and What Is a 457(b)? for how these accounts actually work.
