Can I Change My MPSERS Plan?

The honest answer is both no and yes, depending on exactly what you mean by "change my plan" โ€” and the distinction matters enough that it's worth being precise about.

No

Switching which fundamental plan you're in

If you actively elected Pension Plus 2 or the DC Plan (or were defaulted into one), that choice is irrevocable. There's no window to reconsider later, and no appeal process โ€” this is by design, stated explicitly on the election paperwork itself.

Yes

Adjusting your DC contribution rate

If your plan includes a savings component, you can increase or decrease how much you contribute to it โ€” including down to 0% โ€” at any time, once your account is set up. That's not changing your plan, just your savings rate within it.

Why the distinction matters

People sometimes hear "you can adjust your contribution" and assume that means the whole plan is flexible. It isn't. The pension formula, the plan structure, the healthcare track tied to it โ€” none of that moves. Only the dial on your own savings rate does.

A historical exception, not a current option

Some longtime members did once have a real one-time chance to switch plan types โ€” a 2012 reform briefly let existing Basic and MIP members convert to a DC plan. That window closed years ago. If you weren't already an MPSERS member in 2012, this doesn't apply to you.

The bottom line

Think of it less as "locked in with zero control" and more as "the big structural decision is permanent, but the dial you actually touch day to day isn't." That's genuinely more flexibility than a flat "no" would suggest.
